Space of Dialogue: A Table for Two Strangers

Washington University in St. Louis | ARCH 111B | Intro to Design Processes I | Fall 2020

Description

This semester, you are asked to design a space of dialogue as a communal table located in Holmes Lounge,
Ridgley Hall, on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

You will design this space with a particular character in mind: a person that you studied in the previous
weeks and whom you would like to engage in a public conversation. This person could be real or imaginary,
but the topic of your conversation must be tangible and substantial. Rather than the person themselves, it
is the character of this very topic that will drive your design proposal.

The space of dialogue must include a table, seating for two and two architectural elements:
- A solid structural element: a wall, ceiling, a column, floor, etc.
- A void architectural element, such as an aperture, an opening, a space to either walk through
or look through.
